RWBY Fan Song: A Letter to Winter Schnee

Hey everyone, it’s Kern here, coming at you with a Weiss Schnee related fan song, and a letter she might have written to Winter early in volume 1. This is just head canon, but the song resonates well, I’d say. When I wrote this song, I wanted to paint Winter as the trusted role model that Weiss knows her to be, while equally banking on busted ego Weiss seems to have in the very early segments of RWBY Volume 1.

I wanted to do a Weiss fan song that’s more “fan fiction” than realty, although these themes are present in the show for sure. We set the stage with Weiss sending a letter to sister because we get no Winter Schnee in V1… so, yeah… this would take place in the ensuing days after the initiation, before she fully acclimates to Peter’s advice.

Hope you like the song!

Lyrics:
[Verse 1] Dearest Winter, I write from this madhouse they call a school, Where chaos reigns and no one minds the rules. You told me to be strong, to lead, to stand with pride… But by Dust, I swear this place is testing every ounce of me inside.

[Verse 2] Ruby, my own team leader — younger by two years, Still acts like a child with no sense of her peers. She doodles in class while we study the Grimm, And skips through the halls on a juvenile whim. Yang, her sister, slams through halls with fists and flair, She calls it ‘training’ when she throws me through the air. Horseplay, roughhousing, shouting without shame… And somehow I’m the one always taking the blame.

[Chorus] Oh Winter, what happened to order and grace? It’s just hall brawls and pillow wars taking place. I try to speak sense, try to bring a little class… But I may as well talk to broken glass. You told me I’d grow, you’d help me rise, But this is madness — not training — in disguise.

[Verse 3] And Blake, mysterious, quiet, and bold, She stares like I’ve done something wicked and cold. She speaks my name with bitter disdain, As if I forged the contracts, as if I caused the pain. I barely know her, but she acts so severe… Judging our family, as if I brought us here.

[Bridge] But Pyrrha… she’s different, a light, sincere, A champion’s heart, and the only one near Who listens, who cares, who gets this facade, The struggle to lead when they treat rules as fraud. With her, I’m not lost in this swirling parade, She sees the girl, not the name or the blade.

[Chorus] Oh Winter, I miss your quiet tone, The echo of your boots on marble stone. I miss your voice, your steadiness, your stare, Here, I’m adrift — and most don’t seem to care. They laugh, they shout, they dance in fire… While I sit here, drained, barely inspired.

[Outro] So, I write you this letter, while I’m away, And you’re serving Atlas in your own way. But if you can spare a moment to write, Please remind me that I’m not right. That the world still holds reason, logic and purpose dear, Because without that thought, I may not last here. Your sister, striving to stay composed… Weiss Schnee… …… An official student of Beacon Academy….

Final Fantasy VI Fan Song: Call Me Thief (Locke Cole)

Hey all, it’s Kern here dropping you a fan song about Locke Cole from Final Fantasy VI (Final Fantasy 6, or Final Fantasy 3 if you play it on the SNES). Locke is introduced early in Final Fantasy VI as a charismatic rogue with a knack for sneaking, stealing, and looking good while doing it. He’s got fast hands, and faster comebacks. On the surface, he’s your classic RPG rogue (or Final Fantasy Thief).

He’s witty, agile, a little bit flirty, and fiercely independent… or, so it seems…

From the moment he appears, it’s clear there’s something more behind the smirk. Locke isn’t just here for riches or fun. He’s hurting. Everything he does, every fight he throws himself into, every damsel he tries to save, every relic he chases down is driven by something deeper: guilt, loss, and a desperate need to protect what he couldn’t protect before.

So enter in this fan song, “Call Me Thief” a tribute to Locke Cole, and who he actually is as a person. I wanted the song to reflect his passing as well as his caution. His values, and his contradictions. What he holds privately, and what he wears openly on his sleeve.

Locke Cole is probably one of the most compelling characters in Final Fantasy VI. Honestly, although he is not my all-time favorite, he stands solidly in the top 3 characters I most resonate with when playing through the game. Merry Christmas from TDF!

First of all, let me just say may everyone here have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. We have two songs…

Sonic the Hedgehog (SEGA Genesis) – A 16-Bit Icon That Redefined Speed

Release Date: June 23, 1991
Developer: Sonic Team
Publisher: SEGA
Platform: SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive
Genre: Retro Platformer

Hey all, it’s Kern here, and we’re blasting to the past “faster than the speed of light”. Yep, you see what I did there, I’m sure. In 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog burst onto the SEGA Genesis with a streak of blue and a cocky smirk, instantly becoming the face of SEGA’s brand, much like Mario became Nintendo’s. The game isn’t just another mascot platformer. Nah, I became a full-blown cultural phenomenon that brought a new level of speed, style, and difficulty to the genre.

Over three decades later, does this Genesis classic still hold up? Well, let’s figure that out.

The Gameplay – Fast, Fun, and Fluid

At its core, Sonic the Hedgehog is a side-scrolling platformer, but it has a few key things to consider. The game is ultimately all about momentum-based physics and high-speed traversal. Unlike Mario’s precision style hopping across the levels, Sonic thrives on the ebb and flow of each stage. It’s all about maintaining speed and reacting in real time to a world built for blazing-fast movement.

You play as Sonic, a blue hedgehog with “cool” attitude, on a mission to put a foot up Dr. Robotnik’s behind (later he should be known as Eggman). He’s been turning the woodland creatures into machines, and you’ve got to stop him. Simple premise, brilliant execution.

Quick Gameplay Highlights:

  • Speed-focused level design with multiple routes.
  • Tight, responsive controls, no spin dash, though. Spin dash wasn’t added until later games.
  • Rings are your life gauge! So long as you’ve got a ring on you, you can get hit. As long as you don’t fall down a hole, or drown, you’ll be okay so long as you have a ring.
  • Collect 100 rings, when you do, you get an extra life. Remember, when you take one hit without rings, that’s game over.
  • Bonus stages, they show up, and they’re pretty fun.

The Visuals – Bold and Beautiful

Each zone has its own aesthetic identity, from the lush greenery and waterfalls of Green Hill Zone, to the gritty gears of Scrap Brain, and stone brick in Marble Zone. For its time, bright flashy colors were the way platformers looked. In an attempt to appeal to children, that was fairly common. That being said, SEGA’s art direction for Sonic the Hedgehog was revolutionary for the early ’90s. The Genesis had a color palette that was able to showcase the completely vibrant backgrounds, and it looks gorgeous considering the speed at which Sonic runs through the game. It would have been so easy for the game to look like a muddy blur, but it never does.

Music & Sound – A Timeless Soundtrack

I think it goes without saying that some games leave ear worms behind. Just as classic Mario games have an iconic soundtrack, so does Sonic. Composed by Masato Nakamura, the soundtrack is a a true masterclass in 16-bit music design. Each zone’s theme is memorable and perfectly suited to its tone and visuals. Even decades later, tracks like Green Hill Zone and Starlight Zone remain etched in the minds of gamers everywhere… honorable mention to the boss fight theme, and the title screen. They’re just so memorable to me.

Difficulty – It’s Hard!

Okay, okay maybe not as hard as some platformers of today. For its time though, this wasn’t a super easy game. The game eases players in, giving you somewhat forgiving early stages. The thing is, it ramps up sharply. Once you hit levels like Labyrinth Zone, you’ll be in trouble. It is a water level… so have fun. Like all water levels in retro Sonic games, it has some pretty unforgiving water physics. Boss fights against Dr. Robotnik (Eggman) are fun but not hard to figure out. The Stages themselves are where the difficulty is really at. At least in the boss fights, if you’ve got a ring on you, you’ll be okay.

While not unfair, the game doesn’t always think through its gameplay style. The game demands memorization of each stage if you want to play them completely fluidly. Even then, you’ll need patience in later stages, and in a game about speed slowing down in a real pain in the butt sometimes.

Legacy – A Game That Changed Everything

Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t just a game—it was a movement. Sonic made the Sega Genesis a household name to so many of us. It gave SEGA a foothold in ’90s console wars, and a worthy rival of Nintendo. Obviously, the game is part of our culture as gamers too. The franchise has only grown, and continues to do so. These days, Sonic fans have a literal empire of sequels, cartoons, comics, and films to enjoy

My Few Criticisms

So, as I said above, the first game has No spin dash to speak of. If you’re used to playing other games, you can’t expect to have it in this one. The pacing issues I described, you do have to slow down sometimes (looking at you, Marble and Labyrinth zones). For it’s time, Bosses are what you’d expect. That means they’re also standard. A lack of variety in fighting them comes down to recycling simple attack patterns, and hitting the boss at the right time… the first iteration of the game didn’t have a save system, and that’s something to keep in mind. Later remakes and later games would have one.

Final Verdict – A 16-Bit Classic, Play It

Sonic the Hedgehog for SEGA Genesis isn’t just a platformer, it’s a game design landmark and fandom touchstone. Even without the refinements of its sequels, the original remains wildly fun, stylistically sharp, and culturally significant to gamers everywhere. Whether you’re a retro fan revisiting your childhood or a new player exploring gaming history, this is a must-play title.

RWBY Fan Song: Autograph

This one is called Autograph, and the reason I made it was because I was inspired by Volume 1 of…

The Deep Remembers Him (Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest Fan Song)

Hey all, it’s Kern here! Still Wakes the Deep is a horror game set on an oil rig. A quick review of the game can be found here. However, earlier this year a short DLC was released Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest, and in my opinion it really is a solid DLC all around.

In Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest, you play a member of a specialist dive team. The group goes to the North Sea to uncover the truth about what happened on the rig, and as you can guess you’re underwater for the majority of the game. I don’t want to give away too much, it’s a short DLC to play through, but I do believe it’s worth the time for anyone who enjoys undersea horror with a dash of eldritch horror meets “The Thing”, which is how I describe Still Wakes the Deep to anyone who wants to play it without spoilers.

Kresh and I thoroughly enjoyed the DLC to the point we made a fan song about it. This is that song, I hope you enjoy it, and if you’re looking for a horror game to play, maybe give Still Wakes the Deep a try. Just be ready for a lot of water related havoc, and that goes double for the DLC.

Happy gaming everyone, and now, for the fan song:

STARBOUND – A Synthwave Journey Amid the Stars

The Starbound album comes to you from the mastermind of Kresh, and there’s a loose narrative to be found across the album about an AI learning about their own humanity and person-hood. It’s also much shorter than our glam rock/glam metal City of Shadows universe, which is now in its second album.

Fan Song: Beneath the Beira D (Still Wakes The Deep)

Hey all, it’s Kern here! We absolutely adored a horror game called Still Wakes the Deep, and we wanted to do a fan song for it. This is that fan song. Kresh worked very hard on writing the lyrics and making the video! As always, the music and singing is done with the use of AI. Take a listen and enjoy!

And of course, don’t forget our glam rock version of the song, found here:

RWBY Fan Song: Battle at the Bar

Hey all, it’s Kern here, coming at you with another RWBY fan song, this time about the RWBY Yellow Trailer. This fan song was inspired by Yang’s combat style, character motivations, and what little we knew of the events at the time…. a little retrospection, a whole lot of badassery, and here we have it: Battle at the Bar. As always, these lyrics are human written, but AI was used to compose the song.

[Intro] YEEAAAAHHHHHHHH!

[Verse 1] She’s tearing down the streets, the engine’s a roar, A blazing beauty, she’s ready for war! Pulls up to the curb, slams the brakes tight, Throws off her helmet, sets the world alight! With hair like fire, she’s ready to show, The storm’s just started, here she goes! Struts through the door like she owns the place, A smirk on her lips, fire in her face!

[Pre-Chorus] She steps to the bar, cocky grin on her face! Orders a drink with an umbrella in place!

Chorus] She’s the Blaze of the Dragon, lighting up the night, Fists of fury, she’s ready for the fight! With Ember Celica strapped to her arms, She’ll blast you away with her fiery charms! She’s the Blaze of the Dragon, hear her call, One punch is all it takes to make ’em fall! When the flames ignite, you better stand clear, Yang’s on fire, and she’s bringing the fear!

[Verse 2] Looking for answers, she won’t back down, Junior’s got the info, but he’s standin’ his ground! She won’t take no for an answer tonight, A fight for the truth, she’s ready to ignite! With Ember Celica, she’s breaking the floor, One punch, one blast, and they’ll beg for more! The battle’s on, you better beware, Yang’s on the hunt, and she’s bringing the flare!

[Pre-Chorus] Watch her bring the heat, the battle’s begun, The dragon’s unleashed, there’s nowhere to run!

[Chorus] She’s the Blaze of the Dragon, lighting up the night, Fists of fury, she’s ready for the fight!

[Bridge] (Guitar solo, wild and fast, with a slow breakdown) She’s got the power, she’s got the might, Like a comet, she’ll burn through the night! With every strike, the world will know, Yang’s the one who steals the show! (Guitar wailing as it fades out into the next section)

[Chorus – Final] She’s the Blaze of the Dragon, lighting up the night, Fists of fury, she’s ready for the fight!

[Outro] YEAHHHHH! She’s the Blaze of the Dragon, ohhhh! With a punch that lands, Junior’s flying through, Smashing through the window, out cold, he flew! Landing on the streets, no one hears him scream, Yang’s got the fight, but not the answers she dreams. She walks away, her search far from done, Looking for her mother, the hunt’s still on!

Rainbow Rodeo – A LGBTQIA Pride Album

RWBY Fan Song: Jinn’s Observations (Remnants of Light)

Hey all, it’s Kern here, coming at you with another RWBY Fan song…

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but as I continue to work on the RWBY fan song playlist, I’ve also begun (kind of) laying them out in what would logically be a chronological timeline order on the YouTube playlist. However, I really, really REAAAALLLLYYY (you see how bad I wanted this?) wanted to have some kind of way to tie these fan songs together into a way that highlights the much wider narrative and universe… and then, it came to me.

We’ve got that in Jinn, (who we now did the explanation in Volume 1, Chapter 1). So, this fan song is all about world building. I wanted to focus not on a set of characters, but rather, the world of Remnant at large. I really hope you enjoy it… and as always, don’t forget to follow us on YouTube and Twitch for fun content.

Lyrics:

[Spoken] Legends, stories, scattered in time, Told by history, destruction in rhyme. Heroes and villains in fading lore, They forgot what they were fighting for.

[Verse 1] From dust they rose, with hearts so bold, In lands where the shadows took hold. Born into a world without reprieve, But strong enough to still believe.

[Pre-Chorus] Darkness came with teeth and claws, No gods to pity, no cause to pause. Yet in the black, they sparked a light, And dared to dream, and dared to fight.

[Chorus] Remnants of light, they carry on, Through shattered peace and breaking dawn. With dust in hand, they forge their way, Though time forgets, they speak their name. When shadows rise to drown the soul, Even the smallest spark makes them whole. Remnants of light, don’t fade away, They are the hope that finds its way.

[Verse] Creatures of Grimm, with no remorse, Built from chaos, a soulless force. But passion burned and wisdom grew, And life returned where darkness flew. Civilizations rise and fall, Still they carve meaning through it all. A fleeting breath, a fragile gleam, Still they reach beyond the dream.

[Pre-Chorus] Prepare their guards, raise every wall, Yet strength alone won’t save them all. The brightest lights will one day dim, But in their wake, a song begins.

[Bridge] There is no victory in strength alone… But perhaps, it lies in simpler things… In honest hearts, where dreams are sown. The truth in them… the will to grow.

[Final Chorus] Remnants of light, they rise again, From dust to stars, from now to then. They are not just what’s left behind, But dreams reborn, in soul and mind. When darkness falls and all seems lost, Remember what they’re fighting for. Remnants of light, these stories stay, And guide the world… to a brighter day.

[Spoken] These are the souls of Remnant… Let their songs begin….

Well, that’s about all for now. I hope you liked it! Personally, I had fun working on the lyrics for it. This has been Kern of The Demented Ferrets! Final Fantasy (NES) Review (1987)

I’m coming at you with a game review of Final Fantasy. Yep! We need to go back to where it all started. These days the game is kind of messy and doesn’t hold up the way slightly later titles do, but let’s not judge it too harshly… it did after all save Square Soft’s butt…

Jurassic Park Review: A Hauntingly Gorgeous Masterpiece That Still Roars

Subjecting Kresh to RWBY: RWBY Black Trailer Reaction

Hey all, it’s Kern here. For those who might have missed it over on YouTube, our reaction to the RWBY Black trailer is now up for your viewing pleasure and hilarity. Subjecting Kresh to RWBY is all about doing exactly that, introducing Kresh to the RWBY series. Kern is a long time fan of the…

RWBY Fan Song: Night on the Train

Hey all, it’s Kern here! This is another fan song that we’ve had up on our YouTube for a while, but it occurred to me that people who hang around only on the blog would never see it. Well, here it is!

Night on the Train is perhaps my favorite of the four RWBY trailer inspired songs. It’s softer, more reflective and introspective than the other three pieces by a mile. Having toyed around with the narrative of the other RWBY trailers that came before Volume 1, surely I had to play around with Blake’s core themes and emotional struggles too… however, Blake’s trailer lends itself to a much more emotional set of circumstances, and world building gets a chance to really flourish.

For this song, I really wanted to highlight Blake’s understanding that running away from Adam and the White Fang was always going to be a double edged sword. That ambition alone was never going to be enough, and that following a person like Adam really begs a few questions about what the White Fang really stands for, and what Blake herself stands for as a person.

So, this is a fan song about Blake Belladonna from the RWBY series. Overall, this song encapsulates themes from the RWBY Black Trailer, and glosses upon Blake’s volume 1-3 plot line, with references to later volumes. This song isn’t meant so much to be in the moments of the train events themselves, but rather the aftermath of it all and Blake’s reflections on the topic.

As always, human written lyrics (by me) and generative AI used to make the song and vocals.

Don’t forget to follow our Twitch and YouTube for more awesome content.

[Verse 1] That night on the train, I ran away, Under the cover of darkness, where shadows lay. I thought I could escape what I had done, But the past still haunts me, and it weighs a ton.

[Pre-Chorus] I thought I was fighting for something true, But my hands are stained by the things I knew. I turned a blind eye to the hurt he caused, Now I stand here, with the truth as my loss.

[Chorus] What was I really fighting for? Was it worth the cost, what’s at the core? I let them fall, I turned away, Now I’m lost in the guilt, with no words to say.

[Verse 2] I thought I was doing what I had to do, But the lies I believed cut straight through. Adam’s rage, a storm I couldn’t see, Now I know the damage, now it’s haunting me.

[Pre-Chorus] I turned away from the light I once knew, Chose a darker path, now I’m consumed. My choices echo, they still ring loud, A part of me’s lost, and I’m wrapped in a shroud.

[Chorus] What was I really fighting for? Was it worth the cost, what’s at the core? I let them fall, I turned away, Now I’m lost in the guilt, with no words to say.

[Bridge] Now I’m standing here with blood on my hands, Wondering how I let it slip through my plans. I ran from my past, but it never left, Now all I have is regret, I’m bereft.

[Chorus] What was I really fighting for? Was it worth the cost, what’s at the core? I let them fall, I turned away, Now I’m lost in the guilt, with no words to say.

[Outro] I thought I was strong, but I was wrong, Now I’m lost in the shadows, where I don’t belong. I ran away from the truth I couldn’t bear, But the guilt stays with me, forever there.

RWBY Fan Song: Heart Metallic

Hey all, it’s Kern here! For this song I wanted to focus on the semblance Weiss keeps, and the mysticism surrounding the Schnee semblance in the early volumes of the series. It almost seems like magic. Along with her emphasis on dust magic as well so tied into her abilities before she’s able to summon what she takes down, I really wanted to zero in on that single most raw talent that separates Weiss from her older sibling.

Winter is, by far, the better summoner in the series… but Weiss, is without question, the better dust mage in the family… Winter is less fluid in her abilities, but more direct in combat, and more robust as a result. Weiss is much more flexible in what she can do, effectively a glass cannon, but that comes at the cost of her abilities as a summoner.

I really tapped into that magic/mystery feeling when writing these lyrics. As always when it comes to my RWBY fan songs, the song is AI generated, but the lyrics are written by me.

(Verse 1) In the silence, I stand alone, A stage of steel, a world unknown. The echo calls, the battle near, A shadow rises, drawing near. I dance with fate, my sword in hand, A fleeting dream, I make my stand. Each step, a glyph, a trace of light, I’ll pierce the dark, I’ll win this fight.

(Pre-Chorus) No one to save, no place to run, A knight approaches, the fight’s begun. In this empty space, I carve my name, I take control, I end the game.

(Chorus) Into the light, I claim my power, A dance of dust, this is my hour. My heart’s metallic, fierce and bright, I swallow the night, I end the fight. In silence, I stand, and the echoes die, I take what’s mine, beneath the sky.

(Verse 2) Myrtenaster sings its sharp refrain, A fencer’s grace, no time to feign. With every thrust, with every twist, The knight shall fall, cease to exist. I call the dust, I call the flame, A swirl of power, none can tame. A blade of ice, a swirl of snow, In me, the knight shall fall below.

(Pre-Chorus) No mercy now, no turning back, I face the storm, I won’t be cracked. In my control, the world is still, I wield the power of my will.

(Chorus) Into the light, I claim my power, A dance of dust, this is my hour. My heart’s metallic, fierce and bright, I swallow the night, I end the fight. In silence, I stand, and the echoes die, I take what’s mine, beneath the sky.

(Bridge) In the depths of the void, I take you in, Every piece of you, where shadows begin. Not a single foe is left to roam, I make their power my own.

(Chorus) Into the light, I claim my power, A dance of dust, this is my hour. My heart’s metallic, fierce and bright, I swallow the night, I end the fight. In silence, I stand, and the echoes die, I take what’s mine, beneath the sky.
